Dogs like the beach just as much as people, yet a vast majority of beaches prohibit dogs for safety, hygiene and other reasons. With several beaches along Lake Michigan in Illinois, it's a bummer when the water-loving family dog cannot join the family for a beach day. Fortunately, Illinois offers quite a few dog-friendly beaches from Chicago all the way to the far North Shore.

Chicago

The main dog beach for big-city dwellers is in the northwest corner of Montrose Beach. The Montrose Dog Beach is one of the Chicago's only legal, off-leash dog beach. The beach offers plenty of open sand and water for dogs, but all must have a DFA (dog friendly area) tag, which proves that they are healthy and vaccinated. DFA tags can be purchased for a small fee from participating veterinary offices. Another smaller dog beach nearby is the Foster Dog Beach on the northeast end of Foster Beach in the Edgewater neighborhood. Belmont Harbor has a small stretch strip of sand used an an unofficial dog beach. The area is completely fenced in, but dog owners might want to take caution when letting their dog off-leash, as it is not legally considered a dog-friendly area and authorities could give you a ticket for an unleashed dog.

Evanston

Evanston, just north of the Chicago city limits, has only one dog beach, appropriately titled Evanston Dog Beach. At Church Street on the lakefront, the beach is expansive and dogs are free to play off-leash. However, dog owners must purchase a Dog Beach Pass from the Evanston Civic Center or the Dempster Beach Office in the summer, and must show proof of health and a pet license to get the pass. In 2012, the cost of the pass was $60 for residents and $120 for non-residents.

North Suburbs

The Wilmette Dog Beach is at the southern end of Gillson Park, and dogs are permitted to play to their heart's content off-leash. Gillson Park also includes a dog park where dogs can also roam free, but dogs must be leashed everywhere else in the park. Dog owners must also purchase a tag for each dog to use the beach. In 2012, the cost was $25 for residents, and $150 for non-residents. In nearby Winnetka, the Centennial Park Beach also offers dogs leash-free fun in a spacious, fenced-in beach area. The beach includes a hose for washing down the dogs when it is time to go home. For access to this park, dog owners must also purchase a pass, which cost $32 for residents and $165 for non-residents in 2012.

Far North Suburbs

In Highland Park, a small portion of the beach at Moraine Park is fenced off for dogs to play off the leash. This beach includes a dog wash station and plastic bag receptors for dog waste cleanup. A picture permit card is required for each dog to gain access to the park -- a regulation that is heavily enforced. Permit cards are available at the Heller Nature Center in Moraine Park and cost $40 for residents and $140 for non-residents. Farther north in Lake Bluff, Sunrise Park and Beach allows dogs anywhere on the beach with a beach permit pass and dog tag. However, dogs can only be let off their leashes at the far north end of the beach. The dog tag is free for residents and $150 for non-residents, who must also sign a Dog Responsibility Contract.
